All About Mrs. Barnes
Hello! My name is Colette Barnes and I'm thrilled to be at Mills Park Elementary for my fourth year of teaching!
I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and my family and I moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, when I was two years old. I grew up there and went to school at UNC (go Tarheels!). I graduated in December 2009 with a degree in Elementary Education. I spent the first part of 2010 as a long-term substitute teacher in a 3rd grade and then a 1st grade class, both located in Chapel Hill. In the fall of 2010, I joined the amazing team here at Mills Park. This is my fourth "official" year of teaching. I absolutely love it!
In my spare time, I love spending time with my husband, Bryan. We got married on July 28th, 2012. I also enjoy playing and snuggling with my adorable kitties, Miles and Kira (they are brother and sister). Since my parents still live in Chapel Hill, I get to see them often. I'm an avid runner. So far, I have run four half marathons (13.1 miles), as well as many shorter races. I also love to bury my nose in a good book, write, sing, cook yummy meals, travel, and spend time with my friends.
I have a special interest in literacy, and I believe in fostering a positive and supportive learning environment in which every child feels empowered to reach his or her learning goals.

Running my first half marathon in Raleigh (November 2009). It was windy, cold, and rainy, but I still had a blast!
Me with my 2010-2011 fourth graders! I will always remember them because they are all fantastic people and they were my first class.
I can't wait to get to know all of my students and their families!
